BIOGRAPHY:
Dr. Luis Ulloa is a Professor in the Department of Surgery at New Jersey Medical School, Rutgers University, USA. He graduated and acquired his PhD from the University of Madrid work in neuronal differentiation and neurodegeneration as well as their implications in Alzheimer's disease. He completed his postdoctoral training in the Lab of Dr. Massague at the Memorial Sloan Cancer Center, NY. He studied the regulation of the TGF-beta signaling pathway by inflammatory signals such as the interferon-gamma. He joined North Shore University Hospital, NY, where he started to work on the anti-inflammatory potential of the vagus nerve and the cholinergic receptors to control inflammation in sepsis. He moved to the New Jersey Medical School in 2007. He has received prestigious scientific awards and has published over 70 peer-review articles in the most prestigious scientific journals. He has been invited to write multiple review and editorial articles. His studies are funded by the department of Defense, American Heart Association, and the NIH.
RESEARCH INTERESTS:
Dr. Luis Ulloa research is mainly focused on the anti-inflammatory potential of the nervous system to control systemic inflammation and organ damage in critical care including trauma, hemorrhage, infectious diseases and inflammatory disorders including sepsis. Currently he is studying the physiological, cellular and molecular mechanisms directing Neuromodulation and their potential clinical translation for the treatment of infectious and inflammatory disorders. He has a special interest in the pathogenesis of Sepsis, a leading cause of death in hospitalized patients.
