BIOGRAPHY:

Dr. Sara Shumway was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana and grew up in Minnesota and California. She attended Stanford University and graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Dr. Shumway stayed at Vanderbilt for her general surgical training and then went to Johns Hopkins for cardiothoracic training. She is board certified in surgery and thoracic surgery. Dr. Shumway has been at the University of Minnesota since 1988. She became full professor in 1996. Additionally she has been surgical director of heart transplantation as well as surgical director of lung transplantation.
