BIOGRAPHY:
Dr. Viorica Lopez-Avila has a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering/Technology of Organic Substances from the Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest Romania, a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA, USA, and a certificate in Biotechnology from the University of California in Santa Cruz, CA, USA. She is nationally recognized for her contributions to the identification of organic compounds by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and for sample preparation techniques such as supercritical fluid extraction and microwave-assisted extraction technology, and also has in-depth experience with analytical methodologies applicable to proteomics. Dr. Lopez-Avila has co-authored 120 publications in scientific journals and books, 5 issued patents, 21 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports, and was the Editor-in-Chief of the Wiley’s Current Protocols in Field Analytical Chemistry. She has given numerous presentations at national and international meetings, taught short courses on environmental analysis, and is currently an adjunct professor at University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Canada.
